ET

SETI, The Search for ExtraTerrestial Intelligence is trying to find evidence of intelligent life outside of our solar system.

What we find may not look like the friendly Spielberg ET above, but getting evidence of life outside of earth will truly change the way we look upon ourselves.

I used to let SETI have the run of my CPU, but honestly there are far better projects to donate your time to. The problem with SETI is that they don't do any real science. The Climate project is better, or the protein-folding project (this project is nice since it actually had possible health benefits), or my current favorite; Einstein@home. Einstein at home searches for gravity waves, which is a much safer bet than alien transmissions.
